ACDI / VOCAEmpowering people to succeed in the global economy
A private, nonprofit organization that promotes broad-based economic growth and the development of civil society in emerging democracies and developing countries. Offering a comprehensive range of technical assistance services, ACDI/VOCA addresses the most pressing and intractable development problems.
Full Name: Agricultural Cooperative Development International / Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance
ProgramsVolunteer assignments are usually two to four weeks in length (a few longer-term assignments are also available). ACDI/VOCA looks for new volunteers to support international development assistance activities in business, agriculture, banking and financial services, marketing, cooperative development, food processing and other areas.
QualificationsVolunteers typically are mid-career and senior professionals in their respective fields and donate 2-4 weeks of their time and talent to work side by side with the farmers and entrepreneurs who are pushing for economic progress and democratic reforms around the world. Volunteer opportunities for non-U.S. residents are limited.
Financial ArrangementsVolunteers contribute their time and expertise on a pro-bono basis. ACDI/VOCA pays for all assignment-related expenses. These include round-trip coach airfare, passport, visas, lodging, meals and incidentals, project materials, required immunizations, emergency medical evacuation, and supplemental health insurance, etc.

Registration / ApplicationVolunteers can complete an on-line application at the ACDI/VOCA web site. Current international opportunities are also listed. You will need to attach a description of your professional experience (résumé or CV). After you complete the application, your name and skills will be entered into the ACDI/VOCA national volunteer database. This enables ACDI/VOCA to contact you regarding future assignments that match your interests and expertise. A willingness to volunteer, however, does not guarantee automatic placement since the process is driven by the overseas clients' demand for particular skills.
History: ACDI/VOCA resulted from the 1997 merger of Agricultural Cooperative Development International and Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance. The merger blended ACDI's systemic, long-term approach to development and VOCA's people-to-people volunteer activities.
